I’ve witnessed far too many instances where drivers are distracted by their cell phones, whether they’re texting or trying to navigate using a map, only to end up in devastating accidents moments later. The brief glance away from the road may seem harmless, but it only takes a split second for a situation to turn tragic. The lure of technology, combined with the false sense of control drivers often feel, creates a dangerous scenario where lives can be irrevocably changed in an instant. These accidents are not just statistics; they are real events that can lead to severe injuries, loss of life, and lasting trauma for everyone involved. It's a stark reminder that no text message or navigation query is worth the risk of such catastrophic consequences.

About twenty years ago, while I was living in California, I witnessed an accident that has haunted me ever since. I was driving along a winding road that curved around the base of a hill, offering a panoramic view of the landscape. As I navigated the bend, a red convertible sports car sped past me. The driver, a woman, was moving fast, seemingly in a rush. What caught my attention, though, was that she was applying mascara, her gaze fixed on the rearview mirror instead of the road ahead. The thought immediately crossed my mind: This is an accident waiting to happen.

She quickly disappeared around the next corner, leaving me with an uneasy feeling. Just moments later, I rounded the bend myself and saw the aftermath of a horrific crash. Her car was mangled, a twisted wreck of metal and glass. As I drew closer, the scene became even more gruesome. The mascara applicator she had been using was lodged in her eye socket, a grim testament to the tragedy that had unfolded. Blood stained the interior of the car, and the surrounding area was littered with debris. The urgency that had driven her to such reckless behavior had cost her everything; whatever destination she had been so eager to reach would never see her arrival. The image of that day has stayed with me, a stark reminder of how fleeting life can be and how dangerous distractions on the road truly are.

To ensure safe driving skills, it is essential to follow certain guidelines and best practices. Here are some key tips to help you become a safer and more confident driver.

Maintain a Safe Following Distance: One of the most important aspects of safe driving is maintaining a safe following distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you. Experts recommend keeping at least a three-second gap to allow for ample reaction time in case of sudden stops or emergencies.

Avoid Distractions: Distracted driving is a leading cause of accidents on the road. To ensure safe driving skills, avoid distractions such as texting, talking on the phone, eating, or adjusting the radio while driving. Keep your focus on the road at all times.

I personally have never gotten a moving violation, which keeps my insurance rate low.

The human body can survive for weeks without food, but only a few days without water. Water is not only essential for drinking but also for cleaning and sanitation purposes. Water is also necessary for food preparation, especially in situations where access to ready-to-eat meals is limited. In emergencies, water is crucial for medical purposes, such as cleaning wounds, diluting medications, and maintaining proper hygiene in medical facilities. 

Overall, water is the most important resource to have in an emergency due to its critical role in hydration, sanitation, food preparation, and medical care. It is essential to have a sufficient supply of clean water stored in your emergency kit to ensure your safety and well-being during unexpected situations, but what if you didn't prepare or have your emergency water stored? You'll need to know how to find water sources in your home.

Do you know where to look? Do you know how to access these hidden sources?

Some types of emergencies are:

No Stored Water: If you haven’t purposely prepped some stored water dedicated for emergencies, and if you suddenly find yourself in need of water.

Used Up Your Stored Water: If you have used up your stored water and still need more water.

No Electricity: If the electricity in your town is out for more than 24-48 hours, the pumping stations will be out of order and free flowing running water will cease. 

Public Water At Risk: There might be times where the public water you have access to is at risk. Maybe it’s contaminated or has been compromised in some way!

6 Hidden Emergency Water Sources in Your Home

1. Water Heaters: This is one reason why I’ll never have a tankless water heater, because I wouldn’t have access to 30 gallons or more of stored water that I access when I need it!

Caution:  If your public water supply has been contaminated, be sure to turn off your main water valve that comes into your home to keep your water heater tank contaminate free!

Follow these steps to safely and efficiently access the hot water you need:

Step 1: Locate Your Water Heater
Step 2: Turn Off the Power by flipping the appropriate breaker in your electrical panel.  Make sure the correct breaker is marked  before hand. 
Step 3: Identify the Hot Water Outlet. It is typically located near the top of the unit and is connected to the hot water pipes in your home.
Step 4: Turn on the drain valve and let it fill your water container

 

2. Toilet Tank: I’m not talking about actual toilet water, but the tank on the back of the toilet can hold several gallons of water and is clean enough for you to use to drink if desperate.

If you’re concerned about the cleanliness of the tank water, keep in mind that each time you flush fresh water refills the tank. It wouldn’t hurt to go in and clean the inside the tank and all of its components every six months to ensure you won’t be drinking bad water.

Caution:  Don’t use a static cleaning products in your toilet tank that disperses chemicals like bleach with every flush. This will automatically make the water unsafe to drink.

 3. Bath Tubs: If there is any risk of not having access to running water due to some type of emergency where you live, using the bath tub to store water can add up to 100 gallons per bathtub!

4. Ice Cube Reserve: This won’t provide a ton of water, but your refrigerator that has an automatic ice cube maker is one of those hidden emergency water sources that most don’t think about. Just put the ice in a pitcher and let it melt.

5. Greywater System: You can install a greywater system in your home to capture all of the water that we use on a daily basis that ultimately gets wasted and literally just goes down the drain.

6. Build an Air Water Fountain: An air fountain system, which is also known as an atmospheric water generator (AWG). An AWG is a device that generates water by collecting moisture from the air. The system works by drawing in air, cooling it to condense the moisture, and then filtering and collecting the resulting water.

7. Collect & Store Rainwater: Another option is “harvesting” and collecting the natural resource of rain. There are many ways to do this, but most commonly preppers set up 55-gallon water drums that will collect rain from their gutters (like the picture below). Be sure it is legal to harvest water in your town or county.  My town will fine you a pretty hefty fee if you harvest water. 

Caution:  Some towns and cities may have ordinances in place that prevents its residents from harvesting rainwater! Be sure to check before you start harvesting your water.

Take the necessary steps to properly prepare yourself in times of need. It’s better to have it and not use it than not to have it and need it.

Top 7 Ways To Prepare For A Drought


The US has been experiencing drought conditions for years now, due to below-average precipitation and high temperatures. This has resulted in lower water levels in the state's reservoirs and rivers, and has also led to an increase in wildfires and stressed vegetation.

The government has implemented water conservation measures and increased funding for drought response, but the drought continues to be a concern for residents, farmers, and businesses in the region. Long-term solutions, such as increased water storage and management, will likely be necessary to address the impacts of future droughts.

The specific water levels in Utah can vary greatly depending on the location and the source of the water, and it is important to monitor these levels closely to understand the impacts of the drought and to develop effective strategies for managing and mitigating its effects.

Atmospheric water generators (AWGs) can provide a source of drinking water in areas affected by drought, but they are not a comprehensive solution to the complex issue of drought.
  4. Improve drought monitoring and early warning systems: This involves regularly monitoring water resources, weather patterns, and climate data to better understand the causes and impacts of drought and to respond more quickly and effectively.
  5. Increase public awareness and education: This includes educating the public about the impacts of drought and the importance of water conservation, as well as promoting behavioral changes that can reduce water use.
  6. Strengthen collaboration and partnerships: This includes working with water management agencies, community organizations, and other stakeholders to develop and implement effective drought response and preparedness strategies.
